Not enough is done to promote good housekeeping in fire-related matters-domestic or commercial.
As installers and providers of maintenance for fire detection and alarm systems we are constantly visiting homes in multiple occupancy (HMOs).
It is common practice in this type of property to have mains-operated fire alarm in the common areas and domestic type detectors in the residences.
In our experience where a ‘cheap’ smoke alarm has been installed, it is a common occurrence to find that the batteries have either expired or been removed, rendering them useless.
Unfortunately, when the batteries run out on a student’s personal stereo unexpectedly, the smoke detector is closer than the local corner shop.
As we feel so passionate about fire safety, we do not promote battery only operated smoke alarms, although we will supply them.
What we do advise is that a mains operated smoke alarm with an integral 10 year lithium battery is installed.
The batteries in these units cannot be removed and cannot be used in any other appliance.
Yes, they are more expensive, but in retrospect a ‘cheap’ smoke alarm can be costly (not necessarily financially) if it does not respond when required.
In addition to the above we have recently added to our product range a mains operated smoke detector which is incorporated into a standard ceiling rose. This operates of the main lighting circuit and also includes an emergency light, so in the event of a fire or power failure, not only will the alarm sound but the emergency light will activate, thereby aiding escape.
If you are interested we would be happy to arrange a demonstration of this unit for you so you can decide for yourselves.
